Floyd VanDer Stoep

Hello,
I am the Spanish teacher at Quest High School. For over half my life I have spoken Spanish. It has allowed me to travel to several Spanish speaking countries and allowed me to get better pay as a bilingual speaker. If you are in my Spanish Class, my hope is that you will soon see the value of learning and using Spanish. In Texas, speaking Spanish is especially valuable since we have so many people living here whose first language is Spanish. Looking forward to a great year with you! Hasta la vista!

I expect all students to be productive during class time. Progress for Spanish classes means that students will complete at least one lesson, quiz, or test each period. I encourage students to work on lessons and quizzes at home if they would like to accelerate their progress. All tests and pre-tests for Spanish must be completed in the classroom.
The Basics of Basic Spanish
1. There are three types of verbs in Spanish, ones that end in -ar, -er, or -ir.
2. A Spanish verb has two parts as demonstrated here: hablar=to speak
habl- the "stem" of the word which gives you the basic meaning of the word
-ar  - the "ending" of the word, by removing this ending and replacing it with another ending, it tells us WHO is doing the action and WHEN (the tense) they are doing it.
3. Four basic "WHEN"s of a word are as follows:
PRESENT- what is happening right now
IMPERFECT- past habitual actions, setting the scene in the past, or a past action which might still be happening
PRETERITE- past actions seen as complete, ie, one and done
                           FUTURE-  to happen later

4. See photos which demonstrate 1-3 above.

Useful Spanish

If you have a job in which you interact with Spanish speaking people on a regular basis,  let me know what you would like to say and I'll help you. Just email me at [email protected] and I'll help you say what you need to say in a culturally appropriate way.

You know more than you thought you know.

Cognates are words that are almost the same or exactly the same in English and Spanish
